La Piloto: The power of Love and Independence

La Piloto: The power of Love and Independence

As La Piloto starts to intensify we see a much more prevalent and intense storyline begins to take form. In each new episode there are multiple twists and turns that leave viewers wanting more. Our protagonist, Yolanda, is becoming increasingly more involved in the Lucio Brothers’ narcos business as she begins to handle more serious deals for John Lucio. We also see a growing number of obstacles beginning to form in her path of achieving her dream of becoming a pilot. The first being that her Godfather, Ernesto, has hunted her down and stole all her savings and does not plan on leaving without causing her more harm. This begins to make Yolanda feel unsafe everywhere she goes. While dealing with her own troubles she also has John Lucio attempting to court her constantly, Zulima plotting against her at every turn, and a budding relationship with Alberto who is secretly working for the DEA. While the storyline in this telenovela is heavily centered around narcos and the intense dealings within a high functioning drug ring, a compelling love storyline is also becoming familiar. It can be determined that this storyline is a polarizing love story as the audience is torn between either bad boy, John Lucio, or sweetheart, Alberto, as they compete for Yolanda’s heart. We see Yolanda struggle with her feelings between both John Lucio and Alberto as they are compared and contrasted within each episode. For example, in episode 8 there is a scene where the viewers are simultaneously watching Yolanda and Alberto make love while John and Zulima are doing the same. This scene shows the contrast between these two men’s feelings for Yolanda and what they truly care about, her heart or her body. This is made as we see Alberto care for her tenderly and make her feel safe, while John is only after one thing with any woman he can find (This scene is linked above - starts around 2:30). The ways in which the writers and directors make subtle comparisons of these two men throughout the show is an excellent way to move the story along and emphasize Yolanda’s independence as well as how much she really is alone in her world at the time. Personally, I have yet to pick a side (or team) in regards to the male leads in this story. Both men have a wonderful smile and incredible looks yet both have let Yolanda down in different ways. It is still unclear which one will prevail in the end. Another part of the storyline shows how Yolanda is being betrayed by those around her which makes the audience root for her all the more. Viewers become entranced by Yolanda’s expressions, her passion for flying, her heartbreak, her fears, her overall ability to translate her emotions out of the screen right into the viewer’s mind. Yolanda is such a compelling character to watch and support not only because of her natural beauty but because of her independence. The audience want to see Yolanda achieve her dreams and successfully find her own path.
