Telenovelas: A Worldwide Sensation

With the chaotic entanglement of details combined with long string of episodes of telenovelas it is hard to believe that they would be so commonly reproduced. However, these long series of entertainment provide a satisfying entertainment not found in many other types of typical television. Some of the most popular and successful telenovelas have been recreated multiple times and can be seen in countries across the globe, far from their point of origin. This common reproduction of telenovelas demonstrates their widespread popularity and highlights the public's desire for satisfying stories of romance and chaos in many parts of the world. One of the most popular telenovelas reproduced was "La Reina del Sur" which was most commonly broadcasted throughout Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela made it's way to the United States in 2016 in the American adaptation, "Queen of the South". However, due to the success of the Spanish original show, the Americanized adaptation did not follow up the original telenovela very impressively. But this is not the case with all telenovelas! Shows such as "The Good Doctor" found success in all corners in the world, as it was reproduced in Korea, the United States, and Turkey where it broke viewing records. Despite the growing interest in reproducing telenovelas internationally, telenovelas in Latin countries faced adversity in their native countries as the governments began to increase regulations on broadcasting beginning in 2005. Progressively after 2005, television regulations became so strict that most telenovelas had been removed from television in accordance with Ley Resorte which was the regulation law, and the telenovela industry was severely diminished.

  1. I find it fascinating the multiplication and reproduction of telenovelas around the globe. Although each version follows the same plot line, I think the cultural exposure offers a new perspective to viewers which makes it more relatable to those belonging to other cultures. Like I said, I find it fascinating that a plot can be reinvented in ways to connect with other cultures yet doesn't undermine the original integrity of the plot. It kind of reminds me of the multiple variations we see with "Romeo and Juliet" and how each story may be catered to certain cultures yet belongs to the same plot line.
